addy never met her father. he left when her mother was still pregnant with her. she has one older brother, noah, who is eight years older than her. her mother remarried quickly, by the time she was a year old, but her stepfather was anything but a good man. he had a good job, and was a lot more stable than the kids' father, but he took his anger out a lot on addy's mother and her.
when she was five years old, a fight broke out in the house. addy was hit hard enough to shatter the glass coffee table as he hit her right against her head. she awoke in the hospital, recovering, but without hearing in her one ear. instead she gained another type of hearing.
it was alarming, being so young and with this new gift. it was still fairly rare, something many scientists and doctors were just starting to study, the fact that trauma can alter one's dna. she went mute to compensate for not only what had happened, but no way to control her ability. eventually her mother sent her away. it was a pediatric center, but their care for her was hardly worthy of the word. she spent almost five years there. they taught her to use sign language, and the doctors ran more and more tests on her brain. that was really the only thing they cared about as she had to teach herself to suppress and tune it out.
her mother refused to do anything to help her, only thinking she caused her husband to go to jail (only adding more trauma to a traumatic case). noah ended up back with his father's side of the family, decently well off, and living out as much of a 'normal' childhood until he came of age and used his family's connections to sign for guardianship for addy.
he's about the only person that's ever given a damn about her, and he got her far better doctors, ones studying the genetics to try and help her. she isn't the most trusting, but she ended up doing fairly well in school, mostly a loner, though she eventually completed high school at home and before she was eighteen herself.
something about what she's gone through made her want to help, too. she might be a cynic in just about everything, but she knows, too, about being a victim and literally having no voice. while she has come around to talking, it's still extremely rare. she did what she had to get through college and get her degrees, but even now she'll generally take the solace of her work, the answers she finds in the dead as she became a medical examiner. she prefers sign, and her control over whose mind she's reading is a lot better, but when she was a teenager, from years of suppressing her trauma, she's developed a secondary ability of creating portals that is absolutely not controlled and pops up when she is under durress.
